An anticyclone is moving away slowly to the east of the North Island although a ridge of high pressure still extends over most of New Zealand. A front lies over Northland bringing thunderstorms to northern districts of the North Island. Another small front lies over Taranaki. A weak warm front lies to the west of Fiordland. Another fine day is expected today. A weak warm front is expected to lie over Otago and Southland tomorrow but bring little in the way of precipitation. Forecast for the Southern Lakes and Central Otago for today is for fine, hot weather, although a little morning cloud is likely first thing. Light northwesterly winds, becoming moderate this afternoon. Maximum temperatures recorded yesterday were Queenstown 30.4 degrees. Wanaka 28.8 degrees. Kinloch 26.9 degrees. Arrowtown 28.8 degrees. Forecast upper level winds for today at 1000 metres northwest 30 kph, rising to 45 kph from afternoon. At 2000 metres westerly 35 kph rising to 55 kph from afternoon. Freezing level above 3000 metres. Forecast maximum temperatures for today for Queenstown and Cromwell 31 degrees. Glenorchy and Wanaka 29 degrees. For Kingston 30 degrees. For Alexandra 34 degrees. Tomorrow partly cloudy with scattered showers about the western ranges but mainly dry elsewhere. Fresh northwesterly winds decreasing during the afternoon. Thursday and Friday cloudy or partly cloudy with fresh westerlies on Thursday turning lighter southwesterlies on Friday.
