Te Kãkano: the seed - origin for the restoration of habitats in the Upper Clutha Basin.

Te Kākano project is an initiative by the Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust to establish a community-based native plant nursery specialising in propagating plants of local origin for the restoration of habitats in the Upper Clutha Basin.
The Trust’s vision is to promote and facilitate hands-on community care, with the aim of fostering healthy lands and waterways, and creating greater harmony between people and their environment.

Breaking News: the launch of Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust and the opening of our native plant nursery on Saturday 8 November 2008
Vision:
Hands on community land care
Purpose:
The core purpose of Te Kãkano Aoteoroa Trust is to support communities in fostering healthy lands and waterways so as to create a stronger link between the environment and humanity
Mission:
To develop a successful, transposable model for community-based nurseries which can service large- scale restoration projects and, through education and hands-on participation, inspire the community to
become closer to the land
To encourage other communities; local, regional, national, global – to adapt this model to their own lands.
Generous support from the Sargood Bequest has allowed the Trust to construct a 1200m©˜ nursery near the shore of Lake Wanaka, on land kindly donated by the Blennerhassett family. The nursery is nestled in the shelter of an extensive area of Kanuka forest, protected by the Blennerhassetts under a QE2 Covenant.
Regular work days at the nursery will teach cultivation techniques to volunteers leading on to planting and nurturing of the young plants in the wild. When fully commissioned the nursery will provide in excess of 5000 plants a year for habitat restoration projects around the shores of Lake Wanaka and Hawea, and local conservation areas.
The aim in time, is to develop a successful transposable model for community-based nurseries which can service restoration projects elsewhere and, through education and hands-on participation, bring people closer to nature.
Current Trustees: Nick Mills (Chair), Matthew Davidson, Jo Guest, Ted Simpson, Megan Williams.
